More Wild Weather Expected in Jakarta

December 29, 2010

The extreme weather that felled trees and damaged homes on Tuesday was expected to continue across the capital over the coming week, experts have said.
Speaking on Wednesday, Edvin Aldrian, head of climate change at the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), said the freak weather that swept strong winds and heavy rains into Jakarta had been caused by a collision of hot and cold fronts.
“The difference in air temperature caused the air to swirl,” he said. “This sometimes causes tornados, which we cannot predict.”
Edvin said the agency was forecasting more extreme weather for the week ahead. “Within the next week, the weather in Greater Jakarta will bring high rainfall and heavy winds,” he said.
Tiharom, head of Jakarta Fishermen’s Communication Forum (FKNJ), said strong winds lashed the city’s north coast at around 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
The gusts caused damage to 30 houses in two neighborhoods in the Marunda area of Cilincing subdistrict in North Jakarta.
“The wind was so strong and it was like a tornado, spinning for about four minutes,” Tiharom said. “It was very quick, but the result was major damage.”
The houses damaged, he said, were mostly semipermanent structures built about 10 meters from the shore.
Tiharom, who has been fishing in the area since he was 15, said extreme weather had plagued local fishermen over the past four months. In addition to strong winds, he said tidal flooding had also been a worry.
He said Marunda residents never received information about the weather or conditions at sea, making it dangerous for them to go out fishing.

@ Cyaneus: The land in Bali is unstable right now. Indeed, Rick. In 7 of 10, Bali is within the 80-foot sinking area, per Zeta: Indonesia Elevation. There have been landslides in Bali, at least since October 2010.  Floods and landslides have been occurring in northern Bali, 22 Dec.. One village has been isolated due to landslides on 29 Dec. 2010.  A water pipe project in Ubud, Gianyar, Bali, was stopped due to landslides, per 22 Dec. news. Four areas in Bali are prone to landslides. Sorry, the news is in Indonesian. The government has recently issued a warning of more landslides to be expected, on TV. Maps of land movement danger zone has been issued also this year by the government.  (But business as usual, predictably) Indonesia is truly crumbling and sinking, from Sabang (northern Sumatera) to Merauke. I’m working on this for Ning blog.

The Strategic Impact of Media in Comprehensive Crisis Management Workshop

December 16, 2010

Jakarta, Indonesia – Disaster management specialists, government spokespersons and members of the media discussed the strategic impact of the media in comprehensive crisis management in a workshop hosted by the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies (APCSS) Dec. 14-16, 2010 in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Fifty-five participants from 10 Southeast Asian countries worked to identify how crisis managers and members of the media could work together to help societies prevent and prepare for, respond to and recover from natural disasters and other crises.  They assessed crisis management from the strategic to the tactical levels and reflected on the need for whole of society engagement.

Workshop participants discussed case studies and shared best practices such as the 2004 tsunami. Media coverage mobilized resources to respond to the disaster and begin the difficult task of rebuilding, and, in the process, brought communities together, with the result in Indonesia of solving a decades-long local insurgency.

U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia Scot Marciel and retired U.S. Ambassador Lauren Kahea Moriarty, Dean of Academics at APCSS, delivered opening remarks at the workshop. “The media can change the world,” said Dean Moriarty.  “When people and policymakers trust the media to be fair and accurate, to present news in context and in ways people can understand, the change can be purposeful, positive, and long-term.”

Just to show you what we are up against, the following is from the ” official Indonesia Site” that concerns itself with all of their weather and forces upon the earth. (note the date and the last date they show concerning an earthquake)

Previously I have forwarded and posted where all the news agencies for the area have, with the prompting of the US government , concerted their efforts for news reporting in case of a disaster.  In short, we will not get the news.

There’s a LOT more to this than meets the eye! The flooding is only in low lying places, that would be the FIRST to be inundated in a sinking. There was only one spot that didn’t fall into those lowlands,
was in Lombok Timur, but I found that a RIVER runs down/up there, a
perfect situation for tidal bore during choppy waters.

Floods inundated at least six villages in Cilacap District, Central Java Province, the Indonesian news agency (ANTARA) reported
Wednesday. “Incessant heavy rains triggered the floods at several
villages. A Cikawung river`s dam also got burst,” Among the affected
villages were Mekarsari and Sidasari in Cipari sub district, Mulyadadi
and Pahonjean in Majenang sub district, and Cimanggu and Cilempuyang in
Cimanggu sub district.

Heavy
floods are still posing a serious threat in many parts of Indonesia
this week, following inundations in some villages in Cilacap (Central
Java) as well as Lombok Timur and Dompu (West Nusa Tenggara). Floods
also submerged several hundred houses in two villages in Pringgebaya
subdistrict, Lombok Timur district, and a number of villages in Dompu
district, West Nusa Tenggara province, recently.

Here’s where the river came into play.
But on a river! Tidal bore.

Floods hit six villages in Cilacap – Indonesia

Posted on December 29, 2010, 12:44 pm, by iviews.

Cilacap, Central Java (ANTARA News) – Floods inundated at least six
villages in Cilacap District, Central Java Province, on Tuesday (Dec
28).

“Incessant heavy rains triggered the floods at several villages. A
Cikawung river`s dam also got burst,” Dangir Mulyadi, head of the
Cilacap district disaster mitigation office said here Wednesday.
Among the affected villages were Mekarsari and Sidasari in Cipari
sub district, Mulyadadi and Pahonjean in Majenang sub district, and
Cimanggu and Cilempuyang in Cimanggu sub district.
“The Mekarsasi flood submerged Pitulasi hamlet, while at Pahonjean,
the flood inundated Bojongmeros. We are collecting data on the flood-hit
areas,” he said.

At Pitulasi, the flood reaching a height of up to 50 cm submerged 90 houses.
Heavy floods are still posing a serious threat in many parts of
Indonesia this week, following inundations in some villages in Cilacap
(Central Java) as well as Lombok Timur and Dompu (West Nusa Tenggara).
Floods also submerged several hundred houses in two villages in
Pringgebaya subdistrict, Lombok Timur district, and a number of villages
in Dompu district, West Nusa Tenggara province, recently.
Due to the flood waters` strong currents, three houses in Semaya
hamlet were carried away
and public facilities in Ketapang hamlet were
also inundated.

Will Hongkong be attacked by tsunami during the loss of elevation in progress? If yes, is there any first sign of sinking can be noted so that people can head to the hills in time.

Tsunami and eventual sea level loss are not the same thing, although we have predicted a potential tsunami for the Philippines of 40 feet, and this is our estimate for their eventual elevation loss also. The Mentawai Islands and the leading edge of Sumatra and Java will not experience tsunami, though the water rushing inland may clash and boil. If you place a plate in a bathtub, and push it gently down, water will come from all directions onto the plate, but a tsunami wave is not generated. We have stated that a tsunami during the sinking of Indonesia will race north. There will be a clash of this water pouring in from the Bay of Bengal into the South China Sea, which will go in the direction of least resistance. Since the water is coming from the Bay of Bengal, pouring over the lowering plate, it will not push back against this flow. Water from the Pacific will have poured into the South China Sea as it is lowered.

Where is the clash point? Push that plate in the bathtub again, this time tilting one side. The bathwater pours in strongly into the down side, and when water from the other sides pours in, there is a clash and boil in the center, a rebound toward the upside of the plate which has less elevation loss. This is the South China Sea which will have water coming in primarily from the Pacific, which is not blocked by island chains as is the Bay of Bengal. This water will pull in between the Philippines and Borneo, through the Philippines, and clash with water coming from other directions. In such a case, there is a rebound, toward the north, thus a tsunami toward the China coast. Where we have estimated an eventual elevation loss for the south China coast of 20 feet, their tsunami, which could occur repeatedly during the time required for the sinking of Indonesia to complete, could be as high as 35 feet.
